The Classical Ayurvedic Massage Oil of Ashwagandha, Boswellia & Turmeric
Mahanarayan Oil is the classical Ayurvedic massage oil, often called the King of Oils, for stiff joints, tired muscles and easy movement. Ashwagandha, boswellia, turmeric, valerian and shatavari are among 51 herbs infused into sesame oil, following the traditional Mahanarayan recipe.
The Herbs
Mahanarayan Oil, the ‘King’ of Ayurvedic Oils, brings together three groups of herbs traditionally used in Ayurvedic massage. Circulatory herbs ease stiffness and encourage healthy local circulation. Calming herbs settle muscle spasms and tension. Nourishing ingredients care for connective tissues. Together they make an oil for comfortable, easy movement.
To Ease Stiffness
Turmeric Root (Curcuma longa): Traditionally used to support healthy local circulation, comfortable joints and the body's natural inflammatory response.
Boswellia (Boswellia carterii): An aromatic resin traditionally valued for comfortable joints, healthy connective tissues and the body's natural inflammatory response.
Ashwagandha Root (Withania somnifera): A renowned Ayurvedic herb traditionally valued for muscular resilience and easing physical fatigue.
Rosemary Leaf Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis): A warming aromatic oil traditionally used to encourage circulation and ease muscular stiffness after activity.
To Calm
Valerian Root (Valeriana wallichii): Traditionally relied upon to ease muscle spasms and restless legs, settle overactive nerves and promote physical relaxation.
Lavender Oil (Lavandula angustifolia): A calming oil traditionally used to promote relaxation and ease muscular tension during massage.
To Nourish
Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): A classical Ayurvedic herb traditionally used to nourish connective tissues and support healthy joint lubrication.
Sesame Seed Oil (Sesamum indicum): The traditional base of Ayurvedic massage oils, rich and nourishing, carrying the herbs into the skin during massage.
Why an Ayurvedic Massage Oil?
Mahanarayan follows one of Ayurveda's most respected classical recipes. Rather than relying on a single herb, it brings together 51, decocted and infused into sesame oil, to be massaged in as part of Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage.

Mahanarayan is one of the classical Ayurvedic oils, named in the traditional texts. It is a sesame-based oil infused with a long list of botanicals, and it has been used in Ayurvedic massage for centuries.
Traditionally it is warmed and massaged into the body before bathing rather than after, so that the warmth of the bath follows the oil. Many people simply use it after a shower, which works perfectly well.
Mahanarayan is a classical Ayurvedic formula in a sesame base. Nerve Oil is a Western herbal preparation in sweet almond and olive oil, built on St John’s Wort and cayenne, and carries more cautions. Mahanarayan is the gentler of the two.
Mahanarayan Oil is a traditional Ayurvedic botanical massage oil formulated by our Medical Herbalists to support comfortable joints, ease muscular tension and encourage natural movement. It is particularly suited to everyday muscular stiffness, physical recovery following exercise, and maintaining comfortable movement as part of a regular wellness routine.
This traditional formulation includes botanicals such as Valerian Root, Ashwagandha and Lavender, which have long been valued for their relaxing and comforting properties. Regular massage with the oil may help ease muscular tension, support physical relaxation and provide comforting botanical support for muscle spasms and restless legs, particularly at the end of a physically demanding day.
Warm, resinous and earthy — closer to a temple than to a spa. It is a traditional preparation rather than a perfumed oil, and the scent is the botanicals rather than added fragrance.
We recommend using half a pipette to one full pipette of oil per application. Warm the oil gently between your palms before massaging it into the desired area. For regular support, apply once or twice daily, adjusting the amount according to the size of the area being massaged.
Mahanarayan Oil can be applied whenever your muscles or joints would benefit from a comforting massage. Many people particularly enjoy using it in the evening before bed as part of a relaxing self-care ritual, allowing the botanical oils to remain on the skin overnight while the body rests.
Each bottle carries a best-before date reflecting a shelf life of approximately one year from production. As we manufacture in small batches throughout the year, you can generally expect at least six months of remaining shelf life when purchased. Once opened, store the bottle in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and use before the stated best-before date.
Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone with high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or low potassium, because of the liquorice. Children under two. If you take prescribed medicine, particularly for blood pressure or a diuretic, speak to your doctor or one of our Medical Herbalists first.
