What Goes into a Herbal Face Cream?
Which Face Cream Should You Choose?
Because creams contain water and oils don't. Water allows bacteria, yeast and mould to grow, so any water-containing cosmetic legally requires a preservative system to remain safe through its shelf life. An oil has nothing for microbes to live in, which is why an oil can have a two-ingredient label and a cream cannot.
Strictly, that no fragrance material has been added, including essential oils, which are fragrance whether or not they're natural. Many products labelled "natural fragrance" or "no synthetic fragrance" still contain essential oils. Our Hydrating Cream contains none at all.
A cream is an emulsion of water and oil; an oil is oil alone. Creams deliver water to the skin and feel lighter; oils deliver only lipids and seal what's underneath. Many people use both, oil first, cream over the top, because they do different jobs.
Not necessarily, though many people prefer something richer overnight, since there's no makeup to sit under and no reason to want a fast-absorbing finish. Our Replenish & Renew Night Cream is the heavier of the range, layering rosehip and sea buckthorn over the base.
Not automatically, natural doesn't mean gentle, and essential oils are among the more common causes of skin sensitisation. The more reliable approach is a short ingredient list and no fragrance. Patch test on the inner forearm 24 hours before applying anything new to the face.
Check the open-jar symbol on the packaging, a number followed by M, such as 6M or 12M, which is the number of months after opening. Jars are more exposed to air and fingers than pumps, so use a clean spatula or clean hands, and keep the lid on properly.
It depends on the formula, several contain sweet almond oil. The full ingredients are on each product page, and our Medical Herbalists are happy to talk it through.
