Our herbal supplements are made from dried and powdered medicinal herbs (this can be powdered dried leaves, flowers or roots, for example) added to vegetarian capsules. They are composed of 100% medicinal herbs inside the capsules, with no added thickeners, binders, preservatives or fillers. The capsules generally hold around 500 to 600 mg of the powdered herbal mixture. Most of Zen Maitri’s herbal supplements are made in a special capsule-making machine by our herbalists in our Chiswick apothecary.
Herbal supplements are generally safe to take, but individual ingredients may have contraindications for certain patients, depending on their medical history or any medication they may be taking. It is therefore important to first consult a medical herbalist if you have any significant health concerns or if you are already taking medication.
Herbal supplements provide a convenient way to absorb whole powdered medicinal herbs with a range of active compounds. If you don’t like the taste of a particular ingredient, they are particularly handy (capsules of garlic or other bitter or pungent ingredients are often helpful for precisely that reason!). Herbal capsules or supplements give you all of the benefits of the medicinal plants that you are looking to take in a very convenient and tasteless form. They also have the added benefit that they contain most if not all of the active compounds of the plants in question.
Our herbal supplements are fully plant-based, since they contain 100% dried, powdered plants, inside a plant-based capsule. Herbal supplements are a specific type of plant-based supplement, as they contain medicinal herbs which can be very effective at addressing a range of potential health concerns.
Herbal supplements contain medicinal herbs. The herbs included in a supplement/capsule depend on the medicinal purpose they are designed for. For example, certain herbs are useful to ease joint and muscle aches, but they are even more potent when used together rather than on their own. We combine some of such herbs in our Joint and Muscle Supplements. For example, ginger and turmeric add to each other’s anti-inflammatory effects, and celery seed helps eliminate metabolic waste which can intensify joint inflammation; rosehip is rich in vitamin C and supports healthy collagen levels, and frankincense helps modulate immune function to ease an overly active inflammatory response. Our supplements are expertly formulated by our medicinal herbalists to maximise synergies between the ingredients included in the blend, ensuring that their combination will be as effective as possible to ease the issues in question.

The herbs included in our supplements are similar to the ones you might find in our herbal tinctures and herbal teas: for instance, nettle leaf powder, turmeric, ginger, ashwagandha powder…
Supplements can also contain herbal ingredients which have a stronger, bitter taste which might be overwhelming in tea form but is easier to take in in a capsule, like barberry root powder (in our Detox supplements) or andrographis (in our Defend supplements).
