The benefits of each mushroom in our blend
Organic Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Known as the “mushroom of immortality”, reishi has been used for centuries as a longevity tonic. It grows at the base of hardwood trees, where it forms large, dark mushrooms, with varying colours from reddish-orange to black.
There is robust scientific evidence showing that Reishi mushrooms can enhance immunity, relieve insomnia, reduce fatigue (especially when due to low oxygen levels), lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, improve resilience to stress, protect against free radical damage and act as a natural anti-allergenic (making it very useful in cases of asthma and allergies).
Reishi belongs to a class of medicines known as adaptogens. These powerful substances support the homeostasis of the body and support resilience to stress of all kinds – physical, chemical, biological, and mental.
Reishi mushrooms are particularly rare in the wild, and increased demand means Reishi is now one of the most widely cultivated medicinal mushrooms to avoid endangering it.
The exact way Reishi's immune-boosting powers work remains uncertain, but scientific studies have shown multiple positive effects. Some of these include increasing the number of white blood cells in the body, altering inflammation pathways, and improving lymphocyte and macrophage function.
Organic Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)
Chaga is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods available on the planet – with higher antioxidant activity than blueberries, turmeric and açaï. This means it protects cells against free radical damage from environmental toxins and other stressors, and studies suggest it can help prevent cancer and decrease the proliferation of cancerous cells.
Chaga has a long history of traditional use as an immune-booster, natural anti-inflammatory and gut soother – among a range of other uses. Research shows that it can help reduce fatigue, enhance immunity, improve mental function, soothe inflammation (particularly in the gut), decrease insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes, support liver function and relieve skin conditions like psoriasis.
Like many medicinal mushrooms, chaga is packed with beta-glucans, which have an array of health benefits, including lowering cholesterol, enhancing immunity and improving heart function.
Organic Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
Maitake means “dancing mushroom” in Japanese – it is said to have been given this name after people danced with happiness after finding it in the wild, because of its potent healing properties. It is also known as hen-of-the-woods, sheep’s head and ram’s head.
Maitake is revered for its taste in cooking and its tonic action for the body, as it increases vitality and longevity. It is rich in antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins (particularly B vitamins and vitamin D2) and minerals (including potassium, calcium and magnesium). It is an adaptogen, which means it increases resilience to stress, helping to regulate the body’s systems in the face of mental or physical difficulty.
It boosts immune function, supports the elimination of metabolic waste, lowers cholesterol, balances blood sugar levels, alleviates inflammation and soothes the digestive tract.
Organic Snow Fungus (Tremella fuciformis)
Also known as silver ear fungus, this mushroom is frequently used in Chinese medicine and cuisine. Its polysaccharides have shown promise in improving skin hydration, elasticity and repair, and they have also been shown to have anti-tumour, immunomodulatory, antioxidation, antiaging, repairing brain memory impairment, antiinflammatory, hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic activities. It is traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat various ailments.
Organic Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)
Characterised by its fan-shaped, colourful growth, Turkey Tail is widely researched for its antitumour and immune-boosting properties. Polysaccharide-K, one of its key active compounds, is an approved anticancer prescription in Japan. Turkey Tail has been studied for its role in enhancing gut flora and supporting liver function.
Organic Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus)
This mushroom is not just culinary fare but also rich in antioxidants and known for its cholesterol-lowering properties. It has demonstrated antiviral and antibacterial effects and has been studied for its role in enhancing immune response.
Organic Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
Shiitake is rich in several antiviral, antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds. Research has shown its efficacy in reducing plaque-forming bacteria, making it good for oral health. It’s also studied for its cholesterol-lowering, immunity-boosting, and cancer-preventing properties.
Organic Messima (Phellinus linteus)
Also known as black hoof mushroom, Messima is traditionally used in Asian countries for its medicinal properties. It has shown promise in boosting the immune system and has been researched for its anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects.
Extraction process and sustainable growth
We've selected the optimal extraction method for each mushroom in this blend to ensure you get the most benefits from them. Chaga and Reishi undergo dual extraction using both water and alcohol to maximise the bioavailability of polysaccharides, beta-glucans and triterpenes. The remaining mushrooms in the blend are hot water extracted, focusing on the bioavailability of beta-glucans. Sourced from organic farms where they grow in their natural habitat, these mushrooms are certified organic, ensuring both potency and purity.
Upon harvesting, each mushroom species undergoes specialised drying methods tailored to preserve its unique properties, ranging from sun-drying to bespoke drying facilities. Sustainability is a key priority in this operation: the wood used during cultivation is recycled as fuel for the drying process, and the ashes return to the fields as fertiliser, ensuring near-complete material reuse.
The full fruiting bodies are then finely ground to a particle size less than 0.125 mm. Various grinding techniques are applied depending on the specific mushroom type, ensuring high bioavailability for better absorption of beneficial compounds. The varying extract strengths in the formula (such as 14:1 for Reishi and 10:1 for Chaga) are indicative of the potency of each extract relative to the dried mushroom. For example, an extract strength of 14:1 means that for every 1g of extract, we use 14g of dried mushroom.
Through meticulous attention to detail, sustainable practices, and scientific rigour, this Mushroom Superblend is designed to be both effective and eco-friendly, offering robust support for your health and well-being.
The high-quality, nutrient-rich mushrooms in this powder are either sustainably wild-harvested in Siberia (chaga) or sustainably grown and harvested in organic farms in the provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi, in the Chinese uplands (for all other mushrooms apart from chaga), in which climate they thrive and where they have been valued and consumed for centuries. Our suppliers regularly visit the farms to ensure sustainable cultivation in pristine conditions, away from harmful industrial toxins. All of our sourced mushrooms undergo rigorous testing to ensure there is no trace of lead or of any other heavy metals or toxins.
