Digestive complaints are common but they can be difficult to diagnose and treat. If you suffer from minor digestive complaints such as bloating, heartburn or irritable bowel syndrome, our Digestion tincture can provide some respite. This herbal blend is made with cardamom, chamomile, cinnamon, fennel, and meadowsweet, to soothe, relax, and ease digestive discomfort. It can also help soothe symptoms that crop up occasionally, like indigestion or bloating after a big, heavy meal. As you can imagine, it’s useful to have around the house.
Cardamom
Cardamom is warming and soothing on your digestive system, offering relief to uncomfortable digestive issues like flatulence. It also promotes healthy digestion and can help with loss of appetite.
Chamomile
You know that calming effect that comes over you when you drink a cup of chamomile tea? It has the same soothing effect on your digestive system, bringing down inflammation and easing indigestion, spasms, nausea, flatulence, loss of appetite and travel sickness.
Meadowsweet
Meadowsweet is another calming herb for your digestive system, giving you respite from indigestion, flatulence and acid reflux.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is warming and relaxing on your digestive system and can promote friendly bacteria in your colon and reduce diarrhoea, spasms, constipation and symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
Dandelion root
Dandelion root stimulates the liver and pancreas to secrete enzymes and bile, enabling the digestive system to function better, helping with indigestion and loss of appetite.
Fennel
Bringing calm to your intestinal tract, fennel is an anti-inflammatory herb that can relieve flatulence and abdominal pain. It’s especially soothing for symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
This product contains cardamom, chamomile, cinnamon, fennel, and meadowsweet.
Our Tinctures contain alcohol. Using alcohol enables us to effectively extract a wide range of constituents from plants. It also means that tinctures keep well - alcohol prevents the growth of bacteria and inhibits enzyme activity. Tinctures are easy to take and to carry around with you as you only need small amounts (generally of 2-3 teaspoons per day).
If you cannot or would not like to take alcohol in your medicine, please consider our herbal supplements or herbal teas within the same range and/or consult one of our medical herbalists so that they can devise a bespoke prescription for you. Please feel free to email us on info@zenmaitri.com if you have any questions.
When to take
We recommend taking 5ml before or after lunch and 5ml before after dinner for a minimum of 7 days.
Always dilute the tincture in water before drinking (see below how to make).
What is the maximum you can take daily?
You can take up to 15ml of this tincture per day, which means you can have up to 5ml before or after breakfast; 5ml before or after lunch; and 5ml before or after dinner.
How to make
Dilute 5ml in half a glass of room temperature water and drink.
Cautions

To bolster the benefits of our Digestion Tincture:
-
Mindful Eating: Pay attention to every bite, chew thoroughly, and eat at a relaxed pace. This can facilitate better digestion and absorption of nutrients. Avoid distractions like TV or smartphones during meals.
-
Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support digestive processes. Aim for at least 8 cups (2 litres) a day, adjusting based on activity level and climate.
-
Probiotics and Prebiotics: Introduce fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi into your diet. These contain beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut environment. Additionally, consume foods rich in prebiotics (foods that feed your good gut bacteria) such as garlic, onions, and bananas.
-
Limiting Refined Sugars: Excessive sugars can upset the balance of your gut microbiota. Cut back on sugary snacks and beverages.
-
Establish Regular Meal Times: Stick to a consistent eating schedule to regulate your body's internal clock and optimise digestive efficiency.
-
Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: These can irritate the digestive system. Monitor how your body responds and adjust your intake accordingly.
-
Avoid Overeating: Consuming large meals can overload your digestive system. It's better to eat moderate amounts and not to the point of feeling uncomfortably full.
-
Healthy Fats: Incorporate sources of good fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. These support healthy gallbladder function, which aids digestion.
-
Avoid Artificial Sweeteners: Some people find that artificial sweeteners can upset their digestive system. Be mindful of your intake and note any associated discomfort.
-
Stay Active: Regular physical activity promotes healthy digestion and can help prevent constipation. Activities like walking or swimming are especially beneficial.
-
Dinner Timing: Try not to eat too close to bedtime. Ideally, have your last meal at least 2-3 hours before sleeping.
-
Avoid Smoking: Smoking can weaken the muscle that controls the lower end of the oesophagus, leading to heartburn and acid reflux.
-
Stress Management: Prolonged stress can interfere with digestive function. Find ways to manage and reduce stress through practices like meditation, deep breathing exercises, journaling, or speaking with a therapist.
-
Watch for Food Intolerances: Some people have intolerances to foods like lactose or gluten which can exacerbate digestive issues. If you notice consistent discomfort after eating specific foods, consider discussing with a healthcare provider.
A healthy digestive system not only affects our physical well-being but also our mood and mental health. Maintaining good digestive health can lead to improved overall vitality and energy. Always remember to listen to your body and seek professional advice if you experience persistent digestive issues.
